Proposal: Lost and Found

As an artist I have always been interested in conveying emotion through my pieces therefore I thought it would be appropriate to choose Lost and Found as the subject for my final folio. Most of my pieces will be of a digital nature although I am also looking to incorporate some mixed media and fine art elements to the illustrator and photographic collage pieces.

Throughout my research I have observed many ways in which the theme has been interpreted for example, Marcel Duchamp’s ‘Fountain’ 1917 (see appendix 1). According to The Art Story (2014) Duchamp is well known for challenging what art is and what it can be and in ‘Fountain’ he has taken that literal approach to the lost and found theme by finding a porcelain urinal, signing it and calling it art. Duchamp has a focus on objectivity in his work and although I am greatly influenced by his art I would like my folio to head into a different direction. Through further research I have come across a famous photographer named Diane Arbus whose photography is of a more subjective manner. Her ability to capture her bizarre subjects through the use of black and white imagery is exceptional. Personally, I want to explore the lost and found theme in a more subjective way like Arbus and base my folio on my own journey from being alone and lost to becoming found.

I’m also interested in creating matchbox artwork for the photographic collage piece (refer to appendix 2) which is an interesting idea that has been influenced by the artist Joseph Cornell. The matchbox artwork will include a self portrait of my face which I will transform through collage (refer to appendix 3). For the illustrator piece I will be taking a fine art approach and creating a drawing from one of the photos taken from the photographic folio. I would like to use soft brushes to shape the face and create a look similar to watercolour as seen in appendix 4. For the short film/ video I am aiming for the piece to run between 1 -2 minutes. The short film will be a black and white, inspired by the darkness depicted in Arbus’s photography.  There will be no dialogue however I will have the song ‘1 Ghosts I’ by Nine Inch Nails playing in the background. In appendix 4 you are able to see that I have sketched down my ideas for

Anticipated timetable:

Week 1 -3:
Look for inspiration from a range of artists, lectures and tutorials. Record findings and add them to sketch book and Google Blogger.

Week 4-5:

During this time I will take a range of images for my photographic folio. I need to have three high quality images that will be mounted on white cardboard.

Week 6:

During this week I will focus on my Illustrator piece.

Midweek break/ in-between week 6 and 7:
The midweek break will be the appropriate time to carry out taking the footage for my video. This video will take a while to shoot and because there is no university this week it will be easier to complete. Footage will be ready to edit when university commences the week after.

Week 8:

During this week I will focus on the photographic\ collage.

Week 9 and beyond:

Touching up pieces and making sure that the photography and illustrator piece is professionally printed and mounted. I will also be getting ready to present to the class.
